The text Pākāvaliḥ, a work of Bhaiṣajya Kalpana is a collection of formulations described under the category of avalēha or pāka. The present work is the English translation of Sānskrit manuscript of the same name acquired from National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage, Hyderabad (Manuscript no. 46/250). The text explains 67 formulations which include preparations like Kapikacchupāka, Kāmeśvarapāka, Ahiphenapāka, Nārikerapāka etc along with their ingredients and indications in detail. The formulations are compiled from the texts like Caraka Samhita, Aṣtānga Hṛdaya, Cakradatta, Bhaiṣajya Ratnāvalī etc. Most of the formulations contain multiple drugs and have elaborate preparatory methods which is involved in the preparation of any avalēha like processing in milk or ghee, cooking in sugar/jaggery syrup etc. Exception to this are a few formulations like Candraprabhā gutika, Mahāsahacarādyam tailam, Viṣṇu tailam etc which are also included in this manuscript. Metals and minerals like Mercury, Bhasma of Abhraka, Loha, Tāmra, Nāga, Vanga etc are also found as ingredients in many of the formulations listed in the manuscript. Although the text contain avaleha formulations, the famous Chyavanaprāśa avaleha is noticeably absent in this collection. English translation of the manuscript has been undertaken, keeping in line with the format followed in Ayurveda Formulary of India. Each formulation is dealt under sections like ingredients, method of preparation and indications which allows an easy understanding of each formulation. In the list of ingredients, the Latin name of the source drug along with the part used and the prescribed ratio has been mentioned. Separate lists of plant origin, animal origin and mineral origin drugs are also included as annexure. In translating the name of diseases, the NAMASTE portal developed by Ministry of Ayush and WHO International Standard Terminologies on Ayurveda were referred.
